Cook the Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the linguine or spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain the pasta and set aside.
Prepare the Shrimp: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the garlic and red pepper flakes, sautéing for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Cook the Shrimp: Add the shrimp to the skillet, seasoning with salt and pepper. Cook for 2-3 minutes on one side, until pink, then flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fully cooked. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set aside.
Combine Ingredients: In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Stir to combine and allow the butter to melt and bubble for a minute.
Mix Pasta and Shrimp: Return the cooked pasta to the skillet along with the cooked shrimp. Add a splash of reserved pasta water to loosen the sauce, tossing everything together to fully coat the pasta and shrimp.
Garnish and Serve: Stir in the chopped parsley, adjusting seasoning with salt and pepper as necessary. Serve immediately, topped with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
